Snow Day + New Chicks

Thursday we got quite a bit of sleet/snow. Alex got Thursday off work, which was a relief because driving in this stuff is not fun. I had to work, but got to work before it started, parked in a garage, and then came home after most traffic and the streets were decently plowed. Our piggies did not get their afternoon snack on Thursday because the weather was really bad. I got pictures of them on Friday. They always come running out of the barn to greet us.

Breakfast time

These little guys did not want to be outside in this weather. They refused to come out for breakfast, so I brought it in to them.

Our farm pigs with their manger behind them. Alex did a great job building this and it stays pretty warm. Its an earthen shelter.

Saturday morning we got up nice and early to go to our local farm store at 7am. They were having their annual cockerel sale. Baby roosters 5 for $0.50. You can't beat that! We got 15 of them. Last year we got 25 and it was a lot! I think 15 will be more manageable. They really help in the summertime with bugs! Ticks are especially hated by us, but we didn't have many last year.

Bye Little Piglets and Thanks to Josh!

Della and her piglets, basking in the sun.

We had a busy and productive weekend. We sold our mini piglets. Two went Saturday and the others went on Sunday. Della was pretty calm throughout the process, and even a little relieved. She seems a little out of sorts now; she keeps checking the bathroom (which is where we had her little nursery).

Saturday night we went into St. Louis and got to see my cousin's band play. Fiawna Forte rocks! They're from Oklahoma. They're new music was great, and I can't wait til they release their next album!

Sunday we spent the day clearing all the big logs out of the field. A big shout out to our friend, Josh, who came down to spend the day helping us. Thanks!! We cut down two more trees and even got the big burn pile a little more than halfway burnt. We also go two loads of manure. We need all the manure we can get, because the soil is clay out here.

We even got a piglet update yesterday. One of the spotted boys is doing very well in his new home! He's been named Henry. I love getting piglet updates! They make us smile big time!

Clearing the Field

Well, we've been working on clearing this field at the house since right before Christmas. We've cut down 6-7 trees and now one of those tall cedar trees on the right is also gone. We're opening it up to plant a big orchard out there. We ordered the trees this past week. I think there are 30 trees coming altogether! Apples, pears, cherries, almonds, pecans, paw paws, and persimmons. Its going to be awesome! The trees should be here in about 3 weeks. We have a lot of preparing to do!

Introduction

This blog is to update friends and family of the exciting things happening here at Sweet Pig Farm. It is also to keep track of our work, so we can look back on all we have done. I would also like to include information for taking care of your pet mini pigs. We love our mini pigs!
